Lesson 1: Basic Numbers

In this lesson, I will teach you eleven N5 words: basic numbers 一、二、三、四、五、六、七、八、九、十 and ゼロ.


Meanings and Readings:

Study Notes:

  • 七 (Seven)​​ has two common readings. ​​なな (nana)​​ is often preferred in everyday counting because ​​しち (shichi)​​ can be easily confused with ​​一 (いち, one)​​ or ​​八 (はち, eight)​​ in fast speech.
  • These are the standard “on” readings used in many counters (e.g., 五歳 go-sai, five years old).

Example Sentences:

彼の好きな数字は​​一​​です。
His favorite number is one.
Kare no sukina suuji wa ​​ichi​​ desu.

答えは​​二​​です。
The answer is two.
Kotae wa ​​ni​​ desu.

私の幸運の数字は​​三​​です。
My lucky number is three.
Watashi no kōun no suuji wa ​​san​​ desu.

選んだ数字は​​四​​でした。
The number I chose was four.
Eranda suuji wa ​​yon​​ deshimashita.

この部屋の番号は​​五​​です。
The room number is five.
Kono heya no bangō wa ​​go​​ desu.

彼が選んだのは​​六​​でした。
What he chose was six.
Kare ga eranda no wa ​​roku​​ deshita.

宝くじの当選番号は​​七​​です。
The lottery winning number is seven.
Takarakuji no tōsen bangō wa ​​nana​​ desu.

スイッチは​​八​​を押してください。
Please press switch number eight.
Suicchi wa ​​hachi​​ o oshite kudasai.

好きな数字は九です。
My favorite number is nine.
Suki na suuji wa kyuu desu.

​​彼女は十歳です。​​
Kanojo wa jū-sai desu.
She is ten years old.

​​私の電話番号は最後がゼロです。​​
Watashi no denwa bangō wa saigo ga zero desu.
My phone number ends with a zero.
