why does tsu and shi look the same?

I just realized this is much harder than Hiragana, アウト is spelled as “auto” in romaji, which made me think it was for “automatic” or “automobile” instead of “out”
auto is オート
Wait… if ウエスト is “waist” then what’s West?

Why are タコ and イカ spelled with katakana when both are Japanese words?
animals are often written in Katakana.
